Work Experience

( March 1999 - ... )
Client/Server Analyst at Birmingham City Council
Working while studying in UCE, but still able to able to maintain high work standard (see praises from my managers here), the job description is "to implement Client/Server technology within City Council and to assist in developing standards, with particular reference to 'end to end' understanding of Ciient/Server technologies"
Duties and responsibilities includes:

( August 1998 - Sep 1998 )
Head of IT dept. at Syarikat Takaful Indonesia, Ltd.
[in Sep 98 leaving the company to continue study in UK]

( Sep 1995 - Aug 1998 )
System Support and LAN Administrator in IT dept at Syarikat Takaful Indonesia, Ltd.
Gained many achievements, including (but not limited) mapping the company's network, clears-up and make a better structured LAN, standardising software and hardware used in the company, opening Internet access to the staff that needs it by setting up a firewall, spearheaded the research in using Lotus Notes to enable fully computerised teamwork, stabilise the servers used in the company (NetWare and WindowsNT) by proper upgrades and maintenance, opens easy communications in the Internet by setting up a mail gateway in the NT server, spearheaded good technical support for the company's staff by introducing various new procedures in technical support division, etc.
Local Area Network related:
  • Tidying up the company's network, also did some resetting and tweaking to get the maximum performance + reliability
  • Creating the LAN's map, also listing each network card's addresses.
  • Troubleshooting a very strange bug,
where the data entered sometimes will be lost after entry in DOS-based workstations, but not in Win95-based workstations
    What was done:
Analyzing the network traffic conversations between the workstation and the server using LANalyzer
    Result:
Found out the culprit, and eliminated it.
The DOS-based IPX-protocol will not save the data entered if the program is terminated forcefully (e.g: by turning off the computer). Enabling a certain parameter successfully eliminated this "feature".
  • Benchmarking the LAN.
    Conclusion:
Found out that slowdown in performance is not caused by lack of bandwidth, but more because of an overloaded server
    Result:
Recommendation to purchase a new computer server
  • LAN expansion projects, as the company grows very fast.
  • TCP/IP implementation
  • Starting to migrate the workstations to use IEEE 802.2 IPX protocol instead of IEEE 803.2 for better utilization of bandwidth, avoiding some obscure 802.3 protocol bugs and avoid the obsoleteness of 802.3 protocol.
  • Dividing the LAN into subnets/network segments to share the network traffic load.
  • Upgrading the server from Novell NetWare 3.12 to 3.20 for best stability & reliability
  • LAN and Servers maintenance & administration
  • Installing Internet Gateway - enabling the whole company to access the Internet
  • Installing mail-server - giving the whole company e-mail facility
Technical feasibility studies:
  • Selecting the computer server for PT. Asuransi Takaful Keluarga
  • Feasibility study of Citrix WinFrame / Windows Terminal Server to connect all branch-offices via Internet.
  • Feasibility study of the use of PPTP (Point-to-Point Transfer Protocol) or also known as VPN (Virtual Private Network) to connect the branch-offices via Internet
    Conclusion:
Rejected, because the implementation was still buggy, and the performance was very bad.
  • Feasibility study of Vinca's Stand-by server, for maximum server availability by providing a backup server running Vinca's software
  • Feasibility study of using Lotus Notes for internal document management system, such as:
    1. Internal Memo
    2. Reports & Minute of meeting
    3. Scheduling
The prototype of the system is finished, and have been demonstrated.
  • Doing technical feasibility study for a proposed accounting system for PT. Asuransi Takaful Umum.
    Conclusion:
Advised to reject it, because the system can't be used immediately - some further modifications will be needed, and no time/budget estimate for that can be given by the consultant. Also the initial price itself is too steep.
    Action taken:
Finally Takaful build the accounting system in-house, by recruiting a seasoned programmer to do it.
  • Studying various database engine to be used in the future.
    Conclusion:
Oracle recommended for its maturity, stability, performance, wide range of technical support availability.
  • Researching Mirabilis's ICQ server
This will give instant communication capability between every staff via computer using the standard ICQ client software. Conclusion:
Cancelled, the ICQ server software was still in early beta and not stable for use in production environment.
  • Installing LDAP server in WindowsNT server and Microsoft NetMeeting in workstations to enable desktop-to-desktop meeting.
    Result:
No longer used, the MS-NetMeeting software took too many space in main memory, slowing down the workstations -> users complained.
  • Researching ways to increase the availability and reliability of the computer server.
    Results:
    1. Scheduled backups, stored in safe place
    2. RAID controller used in duplexing mode to minimize downtime caused by hard disk failure, and to increase queries response time.
    3. Each server duplicates other servers, effectively backing up each other (based on suggestions from other colleagues)
    4. All servers using UPS
  • Researching request from Head of Finance dept for stock-tracking software, to optimize investments return from stock-trading.
    Result:
    Installation of IMQ system
  • Researching computer hardware upgrade requests from users, and creating recommendation letters for the ones that needed it.
Standard-setting:
  • Defining standard desktop computer configuration
  • Defining standard desktop computer software configuration
  • Helping define the programming procedure
Other projects:
  • Year2000 impact assessment project, and then took the necessary actions to ensure full Y2K compliance.
  • Setting up WindowsNT server for use as Intranet server (Lotus Notes server + mail server + Internet gateway)
  • Documenting the workstations;
hardware components, software installed, network configuration, etc.
  • Connecting some branch-office's computer to head office's database, using Internet.
    Strategy used: batch-online.

( Sep 1995 - Sep 1996 )
Clipper database programmer in IT dept at Syarikat Takaful Indonesia, Ltd.
During this time, completed many insurance-related database projects; one of them involved in creating modules that maintains records as much as 300,000+ with .DBF file format. Also responsible for finding the solutions for many performance-related problems with the database/ programming language/network.

( Sep 1993 - Sep 1995 )
Computer Lab. Assistant at Budi Luhur University
